Rainsong and Mudslide energize GEAR
-by Jody Holman
Rainsong and Mudslide are a versatile feminist duo.
At their November performance at the GEAR coffeehouse, they did three sets of mostly original material, with content ranging from political and philosophic to emotional and spiritual. Also included were some instrumentals and several humorous pieces.
Both are skilled and creative musicians. Rainsong played electric piano and acoustic and
electric guitars, with Mudslide on electric bass and oboe. They shared lead and supporting vocals. There was some added interest on afuche, chimes, and tone drum from Gayle Crawford.
A variety of styles was employed, ranging from blues, Ma Rainey's Prove It On Me; to folk, Children of Mother Earth; to country, Cycle Dyke; to classical Moontides. Jazz, however, is their preferred genre. In Easy Money,
Olympics snagged
The gay olympics are set to begin at 1 p.m., August 28, 1982, I at Kezar Stadium. The Games Organizing Committee is expecting over 4000 participants from over 27 countries throughout the eight day event. Of the estimated $300,000 needed for the event, $15,000 has been raised. Opening day ceremonies will be marked by a torch carried from Stonewall in New York City to the games site. Gold, silver and bronze medals for event winners are being cast.
One snag in the event has developed concerning the use of
the work "olympic." Public Law 95-606, commonly known as the Amateur Sports Act of 1978, reserved exclusive use of the term "olympics," "olympiad" and their variations in titles to the U.S. Olympics Committee (USOC) which must grant permission for the title's use. If permission is not granted, the USOC may recover any and all funds solicited via the use of the title "olympics." Dialogue with USOC has not been positive, though it has been quick to deny any prejudice against homosexuals. It is likely the title will be changed.
EXCALIBUR
Rainsong did some exciting skat singing. (It's a humorous song about entering sweepstakes and hoping to hit it rich.) There was also a strong bass solo from Mudslide.
.. at Tenth Muse
The Tenth Muse Coffeehouse. has started its 1982 season. It is located at 202 N. Lincoln St. in Kent.

Their political material included topics such as nuclear war, pollution, and sexism.. Don't Call Me Girl is a powerful statement on name-calling done in a country western style. As Rainsong point out, "A girl is a child/but I've been grown up for years...Proud of what I am/I'm a woman." the audience, participation on this one was very strong..
The group's arrangements, harmonies, and contect produce a tight, sophisticated sound. Their rapport is excellent, due to the humor and warmth they share with the audience.
